Elephant Head Mountain lies on the northern edge of the Absaroka Mountains within the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. This unique and notable square-top mountain is visible from portions of I-90 between Big Timber and Livingston. Access the trailhead from Swingley Road, then onto Bruffey Lane and finally through the 63 Ranch. Please drive slowly and with respect, as this is a public access through the privately owned 63 Ranch. The trail starts on an easy grade, but not too far into the hike, the trail begins to ascend at a more tiring pace.
Eventually, the forest begins to give way to open parks that provide scenic vantages of all directions. Continue, and the view only gets better, culminating at the meadow at the base of Elephant Head. This point is far enough for some, and you won’t go home disappointed at having made it only to the base of the Mountain. The hike to the top is a non-technical scramble and the view is…go see for yourself.
Remember to tread lightly and leave no trace.
